Now Can We Impeach?
Documents reveal PR push for Iraq war preceded intel findings Raw Story August 22, 2008 New documents from within the Bush administration and US intelligence community during the run-up to the invasion of Iraq reveal that the White House began assembling a case for war before it had compiled the intel that ostensibly formed the basis of that case. A new report on the documents from George Washington University's National Security Archive also presents compelling evidence that the Bush administration pressured the CIA and other intelligence agencies to tailor their reports to back-up Bush's desire to invade. The report suggests the bulk of this effort was run out of Vice President Dick Cheney's office, backing up numerous other post-war examinations of the path to invasion that saw Cheney as the mastermind of the plan to oust Saddam Hussein. The Archive published a July 2002 draft of a CIA "White Paper" on Iraq's Weapons of Mass Destruction. The draft was prepared months before a National Intelligence Estimate on Saddam's regime, which Congress did not demand until September, although the final "White Paper" released in October purportedly summarized that very NIE. Sierra Club Thanks Pelosi for Offshore DrillingAt 5:18 PM today I received this in my email from the Sierra Club Insider: The Drill of It All Did you know that oil companies are already sitting on 68 million acres of leases that they aren't even drilling? Which kind of makes you wonder: Why are Big Oil and its allies suddenly desperate to get their hands on the last few places that are still protectedour natural treasures, wildlife refuges, and pristine coastlines? They wouldn't use the concerns caused by high gas prices as an excuse to grab it ALL, would they? Check out our map showing how much of our country Big Oil has already got and spread the word by forwarding it to friends who agree: Enough is enough. So far, one woman has stood up to Big Oil. Let's thank Speaker Pelosi for keeping a cool head and holding out for real solutions. When you click the link to "thank Speaker Pelosi," you get a preform letter to send her the following happy message: Petition to Nancy Pelosi: Thank you Nancy Pelosi for standing up to Big Oil. We understand that we can't drill our way out of this problem because we have less than 3 percent of the world's oil reserves. America can't waste time on proposals that only benefit the Big Oil companies who're already raking in record profits. We need sensible solutions now for consumer relief, stronger fuel economy standards, and real investment in energy efficiency and clean, renewable energy. Sincerely, The problem here is that she had already fallen to her knees before the petroleum-industrial complex: Pelosi Proposes to Expand Offshore Drilling as Part of Energy Bill Democracy Now! August 19, 2008 House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has proposed to make expanded offshore oil drilling part of a new Democratic energy bill. Pelosi's proposal comes just weeks after she described a Republican vote on drilling as a "hoax on the American people." In recent weeks both Pelosi and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama have reversed their stances on offshore drilling. Oh, we do live in interesting times. posted by Merle Harton Jr. | 7:15 PM | |
